“OrphanAnaesthesia” is a common project of the Scientific Working Group of Paediatric Anaesthesia of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI e.V.), Orphanet, and the European Society of Paediatric Anaesthesia (ESPA). The aim of “OrphanAnaesthesia” is to contribute to the safety of patients who suffer from rare diseases by publishing recommendations for anaesthesia.
The project for an open-access database of information on anaesthesia for patients with rare diseases was initiated by the Scientific Working Group of Paediatric Anaesthesia of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine in 2005.
Recognising the dimensions of this idea, the search for a European organisation providing a suitable framework began. Initially, “OrphanAnaesthesia” was supported by Orphanet, a well-established portal for rare diseases and orphan drugs. “OrphanAnaesthesia” continues to cultivate a close partnership with the European anaesthesiology societies.
"OrphanAnaesthesia" prepares and publishes peer-reviewed, free and everywhere accessible, and concise recommendations for anaesthesiologists that reflect the best available evidence at that moment to help planning and administering anaesthesia in patients suffering from rare diseases.
